TROOP 71 FORMS and REPORTS :

PUBLICITY

Pam Girton representing the Xenia Gazette, Fairborn Herald, and the Beavercreek News came to a Roundtable and talked about getting Scouting articles in the newspaper. She said it was easy and here is a summary of what she told us. With their limited resources they cannot cover most Scout events.

That is where we can help to get our Scouting activities in print. First, it would be helpful to run it past the ScoutMaster or Committee Chair for approval prior to submission to the paper. (A) Submissions should be current. (B) If an article and or pictures are submitted they assume that they have permission from everyone shown or listed to publish it in the paper. (C) Brief copy is best more likely to get published and more likely to get read. (D) Action photos are best. Photos with everyone in a line saying cheese aren't as interesting. They would like digital photos sent as a jpg file. Pictures can be submitted but it would be better to have them scanned. (E) They run Macintosh and cannot read stuff from the PC world so you should only send text in email text and jpg files. It would be best to write, edit, spell check, etc. in a word processing program and then cut and paste this into the email. Email this information to pgirton@xeniagazette.com. (F) Finally, let the rest of the Troop know so we can look for the article. -Irv Martin

OTHER WEBSITE RESOURCES:

A Scout is Helpful

  • American Red Cross Comfort Kits Service Project - The American Red Cross is always in need of what they call "Comfort Kits" that they give out to people when they respond to emergency situations (house fires, flooding, etc).
    • The American Red Cross will supply you with the bags - all you have to do is fill them. This is a great project that multiple people can do together.
    • Here are the items that are part of the Comfort Kits - (Please ensure deodorant, toothpaste, shampoo, and soap are regular size and not samples or hotel/motel items): Shampoo / Deodorant / Bar of Soap / Flouride Toothpaste / Toothbrush (soft) / Shaving Cream / Razor (2) / Lotion / Tissue (travel size pack) / Comb / Washcloth
    • Elizabeth Long (937) 222-0124 x139 / elong@dac.redcross.org

A Scout is Reverent

  • Strength for Service, to God and Country - http://www.strengthforservice.org/order.htm or 800-321-5692. This is a daily devotional revised from WWII by an eagle project and intended for our service men and women, but also scouts and generally. It is sponsored by the United Methodist Men Foundation. I find it a very good daily devotional. It is intended for an interdenominational Christian audience but does have a few pages devoted to other world religions as well.
  • USScouts.org has some very good resources for Chaplain's Aids - http://www.usscouts.org/
